Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF)
MDF is a composite board, made of wood fibers, that has
a smooth surface. It is noted for good interior machine-ability.
The primary component is soft wood that has been broken down into wood
fibers; the main tree used for MDF in the USA is pine, but a wide variety
of soft wood species will constitute a suitable base for MDF production.
Other materials have been successfully used to make MDF, including
waste paper, randomly collected waste wood and bamboo. Mixing wood and
other non-wood materials such as fibers of glass, steel, carbon and aramide
have all resulted in successful MDF products.
MDF is used for furniture, cabinets, and moldings. it
is increasingly used for trim work around windows, doors, and baseboards
in homes.
MDF is a very stable underlay for countertops to be
covered with laminate. |
