Melamine
Melamine material has come along way from when it first
introduced. It
is very dense because of higher pressures used during the manufacturing
process. In addition, the resins used to bind the particles of wood
together, that make up the core, are stronger and impregnate the wood
more deeply making the material stronger. Melamine is often referred
to as "thermal
fused melamine materials".
Definition The word "melamine" refers
to the finish applied to the particleboard. The finish is heat sealed
into the wood for a durable, scratch resistant finish.
Products There are various grades of particleboard
and melamine. Melamine is widely used in many products. Melamine
dinnerware is a product you will see in many homes.
Cabinet Colors Melamine for cabinets is usually
thermal fused on plywood or particleboard. It is available in colors
— usually white, black, and shades of gray — as well as several wood grains.
Characteristics of Melamine
-
High resistance to heat and physical/chemical degradation
-
Moisture resistance (adhesives)
-
Surface properties such as hardness, gloss and scratch resistance
(for example in laminates and coatings)
-
Flame retardant (polyurethane foams)
