Melamine

Melamine material has come along way from when it first introduced.  It is very dense because of higher pressures used during the manufacturing process. In addition, the resins used to bind the particles of wood together, that make up the core, are stronger and impregnate the wood more deeply making the material stronger.  Melamine is often referred to as "thermal fused melamine materials".

Definition  The word  "melamine" refers to the finish applied to the particleboard.  The finish is heat sealed into the wood for a durable, scratch resistant finish.

Products  There are various grades of particleboard and melamine.  Melamine is widely used in many products.  Melamine dinnerware is a product you will see in many homes.

Cabinet Colors  Melamine for cabinets is usually thermal fused on plywood or particleboard.  It is available in colors — usually white, black, and shades of gray — as well as several wood grains.

Characteristics of Melamine

  • High resistance to heat and physical/chemical degradation

  • Moisture resistance (adhesives)

  • Surface properties such as hardness, gloss and scratch resistance (for example in laminates and coatings)

  • Flame retardant (polyurethane foams)

Advantages

  • Easy to clean

  • It comes in different colors and patterns that look very much like real wood.

  • The outer layer that you see is fused to the core thermally making a tough surface that resists scratches and stains.

Disadvantages

Not water-resistant. Although the surface is fairly resistant to water, the core will swell and become brittle if exposed to moisture.

Watch Out For

The less expensive, poor quality laminate/melamine is still around so make sure the kind your cabinet-maker uses has a high-pressure core and is thermally fused.
