Cabinet Types: Common Ways of Making Cabinets

Custom, Semi-Custom, and Stock

Stock

Widths for stock cabinets begin at nine inches and increase in three-inch increments to 48 inches (usually the largest standard size stock cabinet available). They come in many styles and can be ordered through retailers.

It's like buying a suit "off the rack" at a discount store.  If you need any alterations, you find a tailor to make it fit.

Because stock cabinets are constructed before being purchased, special sizes are not available.  To close gaps between a cabinet and an appliance or wall, filler strips are used.

Stock cabinets are usually distributed by the mega-warehouse home centers

Advantages

Price.

May come with a warranty.

  Disadvantages

Sizes usually come in 3” increments only in width.

Height and depth come in standard only.

Longevity is shortest.

On average it takes 3-4 weeks to get a replacement if a cabinet is damaged in shipping.

Choices are limited.

A Cabinet for Every Budget

EastBank Interiors has a cabinet for practically any budget.

One of the main considerations in the choice of type is how long you expect to be in the house.  If you are remodeling the house for resale then you will want to look at stock cabinets.  If you are planning to raise a family in the house then you may want to look at custom or semi-custom cabinets.  If you are working with existing walls that are unusual sizes or angles you will sacrifice space if you choose stock cabinets.  If your main concern is a limited budget then stock may be your only option.
